One of the world’s largest sources of marine plastic pollution is the Indonesian archipelago. At the beginning of this year China banned foreign plastic waste entering the country resulting in an increase of plastic waste being shipped to other Southeast-Asian countries including Indonesia.

At least 10 Million plastic bags are being used in the archipelago on a daily basis. A functioning waste collection and management infrastructure is still the exception rather than the rule. Environmental Awareness is still low.

Targeting the roots of the issue, the MOPF founders developed the idea Tasini: reusable shopping bags from recycled plastic waste in shape of marine animals.

The small turtle, octopus, shark or manta rays are eco-ambassadors raising awareness about plastic pollution and at the same time function as a fashionable accessory. The foldable bag is attached to a keychain and can save up to 400 plastic bags a year - a fun approach to nature conservation!

The production of 'Tasini' bags with high environmental and social standards has now started in Indonesia. "We were able to reduce production costs and thus to reach even more people," reports Roger Spranz.

Part of the project is a large-scale campaign to raise environmental awareness on the subject of marine litter. "We are currently developing entertaining and educational cartoon films with Tasini characters and a Tasini game app," says Spranz.

His colleague Paritosha Kobbe is pleased about the positive feedback also from outside of Indonesia: "We have also had great interest in Europe and America and are currently considering how we can use Tasini most effectively in other regions to reduce the amount of plastic bags used.
